CRUZ CHRONICLES SPECIAL - OPERATION MIDAS PART 0

0300H, somewhere in the Western hemisphere, exact coordinates undisclosed. A dark-garbed figure paused for a few seconds in front of a seemingly empty wall of an abandoned structure. After uttering some murmuring sound and touching it with his right palm, the wall opened, without revealing much as the other side was all too dark. The figure stepped forward and was seemingly swallowed in the darkness ahead of him.

From the newcomer’s perspective, three shadowed figures can be made out, all male, seated around a huge, table-like platform. “Morning!” the middle figure greeted with a sarcastic voice. “I gather we’re all here. We can get started.”

The central part of the platform suddenly generated a blinding light, slightly revealing details of the formerly shadowed figures. Judging from their garments, all three are highly decorated officers, seasoned, if the word is appropriate. Looking closely at the light from the platform, one can surmise the projected image of what looks like a city.

“Last night at 1800H we received intel from our encampment in Leboux of several Axis activities in multiple areas within and outside the city,” the middle figure stood up, “one of the scout reports mentioned the sightings of Priority Targets 1 and 2.” The projected image changed a bit, displaying facial images of two individuals, one with female features, while the other's face was covered with a breathing device.

“That’s not our only concern” the figure to the left of the standing one interrupted. “Two days ago, we’ve suddenly lost communication with one of our assets in the city, a good one, if I may add. However, their commanding officer reportedly engaged several enemy units without directives from us. As of this moment, they’ve been marked as a rogue unit. Orders are to bring them in: Dead or Alive.”

The third figure pushed a dossier on the platform towards the newcomer, “Unfortunately for us, we need you and your men to handle the situation in Leboux,” said the figure followed with a heavy sigh.

The newcomer moved closer to the lit platform to pick the file. “As usual, this meeting never happened and as far as ASOCOM is concerned, you and your men don’t exist and therefore are not acting under direct orders from us” said the first figure in a firm tone. “Are we clear on that, Ozz?”

“Loud and clear, General. Loud and clear!”
